Reading and discussion of central works in the social and economic history of the period. The class begins with the fundamental issues of population dynamics, price trends, and agrarian change. Thereafter the weekly agenda is decided in consultation, selecting from such topics as social structure and class; urbanization; poverty; family relationships; gender; crime and the law; protest and rebellion; education and literacy; material culture; popular beliefs; early industrialism; internal commerce and overseas trade.
