Anthropology of the Body
P. Sean Brotherton
T 1.30-3.20 SA10 212
Fall 2013

Drawing on a wide and interdisciplinary range of texts, both classic and more recent, the course examines the theoretical debates of the body as a subject of anthropological, historical, psychological, medical, and literary inquiry. We explore specific themes, for example, the persistence of the mind/body dualism; experiences of embodiment/alienation; phenomenology of the body; Foucauldian notions of biopolitics, bio-power, and the ethic of the self; the medicalized body; and the gendered body, among other salient themes.
