Writing History
John Demos
T 3.30-5.20 HGS 301
Spring 2015

The focus of the seminar is prose-writing about history. We proceed through reading and discussion of exemplary texts, with an emphasis on their literary aspects (including thematic and narrative structure, author-to-subject connections, the fact/fiction boundary, and the moral dimension of historical work). There is also a monthlong practicum, set in the middle of the term and devoted entirely to the students' own writing. The goal throughout is to raise consciousness about this oft-neglected part of the historian's taskā€”and to improve performance within it.
