Literature of the Spanish Middle Ages

This course introduces students to some of the primary literary works of the Castilian Middle Ages and provides the appropriate historical context for further detailed study of this period. Texts studied include the Cantar de Mío Cid and other medieval texts related to the Cid tradition, the Poema de Fernán González, Berceo's Milagros de Nuestra Señora and Poema de Santa Oria, selections from Alfonso X, Don Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor, Juan Ruiz's Libro de buen amor, and Jorge Manrique's "Coplas por la muerte de su padre."
