Writing History
John Demos
T 3.30-5.20 HGS 117
Spring 2016

The focus of the seminar is prose writing about history. We proceed through reading and discussion of exemplary texts, with an emphasis on their literary aspects (including thematic and narrative structure, author-to-subject connections, the fact/fiction boundary, and the moral dimension of historical work). There is also a monthlong practicum, set in the middle of the term and devoted entirely to the students' own writing. The goal throughout is to raise consciousness about this oft-neglected part of the historian's taskā€”and to improve performance within it.
