This seminar considers how performance addresses history, and how history shapes performance. Topics include the archive and the repertoire; collective memory and trauma; documentary; fictive historiography; and queer and feminist approaches to time and temporality. Consideration is also given to the role of digital technologies in transforming how we access, interpret, and remix the past. Attention is paid to the genres of history writing and to the ethics and aesthetics of reconstructing, reinterpreting, and reenacting the past.

Enrollment limited; permission of the instructor required.
